Healey Steps Down Amid Defence Funding Dispute
John Healey has resigned from his position as defence secretary amid ongoing disagreements within the government concerning the financing of a long-delayed military spending plan.
In his resignation letter addressed to the prime minister, Healey expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposed settlement for the defence investment plan (DIP), stating that it
"falls well short of what is required for defence and the country at this dangerous time".
He further criticized the leadership and financial commitment from key figures, noting that
"Sir Keir Starmer had been 'unable' and the Treasury 'unwilling' to 'commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats'."
The DIP is intended to outline the funding strategy for new equipment and defence infrastructure over the next decade, following a comprehensive review of military capabilities conducted last year.
