Unlikely Friendship Amid Political Tensions
For several weeks, Donald Trump has launched a series of public criticisms targeting the prime minister, while Sir Keir Starmer has also increased his vocal disapproval of the former US president. Despite this, the relationship between their respective deputies appears to be thriving.
David Lammy, who serves as justice secretary overseeing prisons in England and Wales and also holds the position of deputy prime minister, recently traveled to Washington. There, he met separately with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House. Each meeting lasted approximately 45 minutes.
Focus of Discussions
The discussions centered on ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Notably, these meetings involved Lammy rather than the foreign secretary, a role he previously held before Yvette Cooper assumed the position. The government has chosen to leverage Lammy's personal relationship with Vice-President Vance.
Origins of the Friendship
The unexpected friendship between Lammy and Vance began when Lammy was an opposition MP and Vance had recently been elected to the US Senate. Last summer, Vance and his family stayed with Lammy at his grace-and-favour residence, Chevening, in Kent during a holiday visit to the UK.
On the social media platform X, Lammy posted:
"Great to catch up with my friend JD Vance today in DC following his talks in Pakistan."
Accompanying a photo of the two men shaking hands, he added:
"It is vital that the ceasefire continues and we get shipping flowing freely again through the Straits of Hormuz. We continue to work together towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."
Context of Political Statements
These meetings coincided with the prime minister reiterating his criticism of Trump's language from the previous week, when Trump threatened Iran by stating that a "whole civilisation will die tonight."
Sir Keir addressed MPs:
"In relation to the language about destroying a civilisation, could I really be clear with this House – that was wrong.
A threat to Iranian civilians in that way is wrong. These are civilians, let's remember, who've suffered immeasurable harm by the regime in Iran for many, many, long years, and that's why they're words and phrases that I would never use on behalf of this government, which is guided by our principles and our values throughout all this."
Last week, Sir Keir also criticized both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the same sentence, stating he was:
"Fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down... because of the actions of Putin or Trump."
Additionally, the prime minister has declared that the UK will not participate in America's blockade of Iranian ports.
Ongoing Tensions Between Leaders
Trump has consistently expressed public criticism of the prime minister, including remarks that he is "not Winston Churchill."
Details of the conversations between Lammy and Vance have not been extensively disclosed, but the policy differences between the UK and US governments remain evident, as does the strained relationship between their leaders.
From Downing Street's perspective, it is advantageous that the prime minister's deputy maintains a friendly rapport with the US vice-president. Their friendship remains cordial, contrasting with the notably frosty dynamic between the two national leaders.
