A man from Dyffryn Conwy accused of assaulting a woman after meeting her at the 2023 National Eisteddfod in Boduan has stated he denies all charges.

Emlyn Jones faces four charges including sexual assault, intentional strangulation, and assault.

The defence case began on Wednesday afternoon, with Mr Jones introducing himself to the jury as a farmer from Capel Curig, living on a farm with his partner and children.

It was noted that he frequently competes in fast carving competitions and plays rugby for the Nant Conwy team.

During the Eisteddfod period, Emlyn Jones was in a long-term relationship.

When asked by the prosecution if he understood the charges against him, he replied:

"I deny everything and the only thing I have been guilty of is cheating on my then partner by having sex with someone else."

'Good Spirits All Round'

He explained that his relationship ended during the week of the Eisteddfod because he had been unfaithful.

Emlyn Jones and his friends arrived at the Eisteddfod on 6 August, spending the evening watching Bwncath on the main stage and socialising.

A dispute arose between him and his partner over her lost phone.

"It wasn't anything serious to be honest," Mr Jones said.

After the Bwncath gig, he headed towards the entrance and saw his friend Tomos Williams with the woman he is accused of assaulting.

He explained that his partner had lost her phone and could not find it.

Mr Jones claims the woman told him:

"Don't worry... you can stay with us in the caravan."

He explained that the three walked together from the Eisteddfod field to look for the caravan located at the nearby Cae Mawr site.

"Good spirits all round," he said.

The Crown Court in Caernarfon heard allegations from the woman of being assaulted near the Boduan Eisteddfod site.

After finding the caravan, the three entered the awning and then a small tent.

"There were no real arrangements, I just remember us going into the tent," Mr Jones said.
"I was wearing jeans, a t-shirt and a coat, if I remember correctly.
"I was on the left, she was in the middle, Tomos on the right."

Prosecutor Caroline Reese KC asked if he had expectations when lying next to the woman.

"I didn't expect anything, no," he replied.

After about 10 minutes, he explained the woman turned to face him:

"And then the two of us started kissing and touching each other."

"Was the woman consenting?" the prosecution asked.

"She was kissing me back," he answered.
"Definitely," said Emlyn Jones.

'No Suggestion She Was Unwilling'

He went on to explain that his friend, Tomos Williams, began shouting at the two.

"I remember him shouting: 'What the **** are you doing, you have a partner, you don't deserve your partner.'"

Tomos Williams then got up and left the awning.

"The woman got up to sit and try to calm him down," said Emlyn Jones.

The woman then left the tent to follow Tomos Williams before returning "to the tent next to me."

Emlyn Jones said there was no conversation between them:

"We just started kissing again."

"Was the woman consenting to the kissing?" the prosecution asked.

"Yes, I would say so," Mr Jones replied.

He continued that the woman touched his penis "outside my trousers."

"I put my hand down her trousers. She didn't tell me not to. There was no suggestion she was unwilling."

The Crown Court in Caernarfon heard the woman met Emlyn Jones at the Eisteddfod field in August 2023.

The prosecution lawyer told Mr Jones the woman had given evidence saying she asked him to stop.

"Did she say 'stop'?" he was asked.

"No, not at all," Emlyn Jones answered.

He added they proceeded to have sex.

"Was there any indication she was protesting?" the prosecution asked.

"No, and if she had, I would never have done it," Mr Jones said.

"After having sex for a while, I asked her to turn on her back. She did.

"Then she put her legs up on my shoulders. It didn't last long after that and I just came inside her."

Afterwards, "I got off her and put my trousers back on."

'I Am Not Guilty'

Following this, the court heard the woman said to Emlyn Jones, "What have we just done?"

Mr Jones explained the woman went to her car, and he felt "terribly guilty."

"Just before I left, I knocked on the car and said: 'Sorry, this should never have happened.'"

Emlyn Jones told the court the woman said to him:

"Don't worry, don't tell anyone, because this will ruin my family."

"The car wasn't locked," Mr Jones said.

He went on to look for his pick-up and spent the rest of the night there. Tomos Williams was also present.

When asked again about the charges against him, Emlyn Jones said everything was consensual.

"If she had said 'no' at any time - I wouldn't have done it," he said.
