Discovery of Body
The remains of an elderly woman were found in a chest freezer at her residence following a welfare check initiated by her doctor, an inquest has revealed.
On 17 February, officers located the body of Sylvia Phillips, aged 89, at her home on Poplar Crescent in Porthcawl.
Concerns and Investigation
The inquest disclosed that concerns had been raised by her local GP practice in the area. The exact circumstances and timing of Mrs Phillips' death remain undetermined.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Christopher Phillips, 60, from Porthcawl, has been charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial. Additionally, he faces a charge of fraud by false representation.
He is currently remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, 16 April.
Postmortem and Inquest Details
The inquest held in Pontypridd was informed that a postmortem examination was conducted on 2 March by Dr Stephen Leadbetter at the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff.
The cause of Mrs Phillips' death is pending further investigation.
Mrs Phillips' family requested a cremation certificate, which was subsequently granted by the coroner.
Coroner's Statement
Senior Coroner for South Wales Central, Graeme Hughes, adjourned the inquest to allow for additional investigations to proceed.
He expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Mrs Phillips.
