Police Assaulted During Disorder in West Belfast
Police officers faced attacks amid disorder in west Belfast on Monday night. The police responded to reports of large gatherings of people and vehicles driving dangerously in the Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road, and Dairy Farm areas.
Officers were targeted by young individuals throwing bottles and masonry.
Political figures condemned the disorder, describing it as disgraceful.
Police reported that two officers were struck and several police vehicles sustained damage.
"I would appeal to those people involved in this kind of reckless behaviour on our roads to think about the possible serious consequence of their actions," Ch Insp George said.
"Not only does this kind of activity impact on the lives of local residents, but it can present a significant danger to other road users."
The officer added that an evidence-gathering operation was underway and an investigation is in progress to identify those responsible for the disorder.
'Absolutely Chaotic' Scenes Reported
Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker stated that dozens of cars and hundreds of young people gathered on the Stewartstown Road for a so-called meet-up.
"The scenes in the Colin area tonight were absolutely chaotic and nothing short of a disgrace," he said.
"Lives were put at risk as cars freely spun around the road and motorbikes sped up and down.
"I strongly condemn those involved."
Independent Belfast city councillor Paul Doherty described the scenes as "disgraceful, dangerous and totally unacceptable."
"People are putting lives at risk and terrorising the local community," he said.
