Council Approves Over £12,000 for Foreign Travel
Edinburgh councillors and officers have had more than £12,000 in foreign travel expenses approved, leading to division among members. The policy committee sanctioned several trips, including business-class flights for the Lord Provost and two others to New York for Tartan Week, an event celebrating Scottish connections with the city.
Opposing Views on Travel Benefits
SNP councillor Stuart Dobbin expressed skepticism regarding the value of these trips, stating:
"No tangible benefit to Edinburgh had been highlighted."
Conversely, Labour councillor and finance convener Mandy Watt emphasized the importance of Edinburgh's representation abroad.
Breakdown of Travel Costs
The total expenditure for the New York trip amounts to £6,500. Additionally, a council officer's attendance at a transport conference in Barcelona cost approximately £1,000. Furthermore, four council officers are expected to spend around £5,000 attending the start of the Tour de France in Barcelona.
A report submitted to the committee described the Tour de France visit as "essential" in preparation for Edinburgh hosting the event in 2027.
Calls for Prioritizing Council Services
Dobbin, who serves as the SNP group's finance spokesperson, argued that these funds would be better allocated to council services.
Watt responded by stating:
"As Scotland's capital, it's important that we're represented on the international stage along with other major cities - including others from Scotland - as a means of promoting the city, building relationships with leaders from around the world and learning from our counterparts in different countries."
