Allegations of Security Concerns in Appointment

The former Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland was appointed "despite security service concerns," according to the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Gavin Robinson made this allegation in the House of Commons regarding the 2019 appointment of Marie Anderson by the former Conservative government.

The claim arose during parliamentary questioning of the prime minister about the security vetting controversy involving former US ambassador Peter Mandelson.

Sir Keir Starmer responded to the DUP leader, stating he would ensure that a review of the vetting process "covers all the relevant issues."

NI has sought comment from Anderson, who has indicated she will not be making any statement.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Office stated: "We are looking into our records and will respond as soon as possible."

Anderson retired from her role as Police Ombudsman in December.

Her tenure was notably overshadowed by a two-year police investigation into a domestic incident at her home, which concluded with no prosecutions.

Commons Debate and Security Clearance Issues

During Commons proceedings on Monday, Robinson expressed astonishment at the appointment process, saying it was "incredible to learn that in Northern Ireland, a political appointment was made following the refusal to clear an individual for security access."

He further stated that Anderson "continued in their post, engaged on issues connected with the legacy of our troubled past with full security clearance, despite security service concerns."

Robinson requested that the prime minister include Anderson's appointment in the ongoing review of vetting procedures.

"Will he ensure it includes within its terms of reference or separately, a deep dive into the appointment of Marie Anderson, the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman, why she was appointed, why the security information was ignored, and how this can be the case?"

In response, Sir Keir assured,

"I will ensure the review covers all the relevant issues and material and I'll take into account what he's just said."

Background of Appointment and Investigation

Marie Anderson was appointed in 2019 by then Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley.

This appointment occurred during a period when Stormont's devolved power-sharing institutions were not functioning.

In 2023, a police investigation was initiated concerning a domestic incident at Anderson's residence in Holywood, County Down.

In October 2023, the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) confirmed that no charges would be brought in relation to the case.

Anderson had been reported for potential offences including perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office.

The PPS stated there was "no reasonable prospect of conviction for any criminal offence."

Earlier in 2023, Anderson announced she was taking a "temporary leave of absence," citing that "commentary" was "detracting" from her duties.
