Decision on Time Capsule Ice Rink Closure Postponed
No decision will be made next week regarding the potential closure of the popular Time Capsule ice rink in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, despite recommendations from council officers to close the facility.
Local skating groups and ice hockey teams have expressed dismay at the possibility that the rink could be repurposed into a play area featuring padel courts.
A report submitted to North Lanarkshire Council's communities committee indicated that the proposed changes aim to increase footfall at the facility.
The Labour-led local authority stated that councillors will be provided with "time and space" before making a final decision, allowing them to consider feedback from the groups affected by the potential closure.
Community Programmes and Reactions
The Time Capsule rink currently hosts various programmes, including an early years introduction to ice skating, a figure skating junior academy, and five junior ice hockey teams.
A petition opposing the proposed changes has garnered several thousand signatures, and multiple individuals have shared their concerns with BBC Scotland News.
Rhiannon Scott, a coach with the synchronised skating club Starlight Synchro, emphasized the rink's unique value to the area, stating:
"Closing the rink would take away something unique to the area."
Martyn King, a coach with the Lanarkshire Lightning youth ice hockey team, warned that the closure would force dozens of children to quit the sport.
Council Response
Councillor Geraldine Woods, the communities convener for the local authority, commented on the report and the decision-making process:
"This report sets out a range of possible ways to enhance the offer at the Time Capsule and improve its long-term sustainability.
However, it is entirely appropriate that councillors are given the time and space to fully review the information presented to them."
