Recall of Dalston Soda Pineapple Cans Due to Rupture Hazard
A premium fizzy drink brand available at Waitrose and Asda is recalling cans of one of its flavours amid concerns that they "may rupture unexpectedly," potentially causing injury.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced on Friday that Dalston Soda Company is recalling certain cans and four-can multipacks of its pineapple soda.
"There is a risk that the cans may unexpectedly break apart and leave sharp edges which may cause injury," the FSA said.
A company notice attributed the issue to a "packaging defect." Consumers who have purchased the affected cans are advised not to consume them and to dispose of them safely.
"To safely dispose of the product: handle the cans as little as possible, place them carefully, upright, in a sealed bag and dispose of them with your household waste," the notice stated.
The notice also urged customers not to return the cans to stores. It stated that anyone who bought the affected products could obtain a full refund by contacting the company, even without a receipt.
The recalled cans bear a best before date of 4 August 2027. Single cans have a batch code of 037130, while multipacks have a batch code of 037129.
The company emphasized that no other Dalston Soda products are affected by this recall.
Background and Distribution
Dalston Soda was founded by chefs from the now-closed Passing Clouds nightclub in Dalston, east London.
Besides being stocked in several supermarkets, the brand is also available in select pub chains and certain London attractions.
Previous Incidents Involving Carbonated Drink Recalls
This is not the first instance of carbonated drinks being recalled due to explosion risks.
In 2023, television presenter Jeremy Clarkson recalled batches of his Hawkstone cider bottles after reports of glass bottles suddenly exploding. He warned there was a "slim chance" of eruption.
Similarly, in 2024, craft ale company Brew York recalled cans of its Juice Forsyth IPA over concerns that they could explode and cause injury.
