Court Reinstates Ban on Stuart Hogg Contacting Ex-Wife

A court has reinstated the ban on former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg contacting his ex-wife, reversing a previous relaxation allowing communication via a co-parenting app. Hogg, convicted of domestic abuse in 2024, was also stripped of his MBE.

Court Restores Contact Ban on Stuart Hogg

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has once again been prohibited by a court from contacting his ex-wife.

The 33-year-old, who admitted to a domestic abuse charge in 2024, was initially restricted to communicating with Gillian Hogg only through legal representatives following a non-harassment order issued in January 2025.

This restriction was eased in October 2025, permitting the couple to discuss child care matters via a co-parenting phone application.

However, at Jedburgh Sheriff Court, the Crown successfully applied to reinstate the original order, mandating that all contact must occur solely through lawyers and eliminating the use of the app for communication.

This development follows revelations last month that Hogg was re-arrested in February after an allegation that he breached the non-harassment order.

He was required to report to a police station in his hometown of Hawick, where he was interviewed and subsequently released without charge.

Hogg did not attend the court hearing on Thursday due to his current residence in France. His lawyer, Mat Patrick, indicated that the Crown's application was

"unchallenged"
and that it would facilitate communication between his legal team and his ex-wife's lawyers regarding child custody arrangements.

Sheriff Peter Paterson granted the application, stating:

"The order has reverted to the original form."

Stripped of MBE

The former player for Hawick and Glasgow Warriors, who earned 100 caps for Scotland, was convicted in 2024 of a single domestic abuse charge. He received a one-year community payback order as a sentence.

During proceedings at Selkirk Sheriff Court, evidence was presented that Hogg had repeatedly shouted and sworn at his wife, tracked her whereabouts, and sent distressing messages over a five-year period.

In addition to the community order, a five-year non-harassment order was imposed, and Hogg was fined £600 for breaching bail conditions by contacting his wife.

Despite these issues, Hogg remains one of Scotland's all-time leading try scorers.

Last month, it was disclosed that he had been stripped of the MBE awarded to him in the 2024 New Year honours list for services to rugby.
