Sentencing of Couple Over Child's Death
A man who caused the death of his former girlfriend's young son has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, while the child's mother received a 10-year sentence for failing to prevent the abuse that resulted in the boy's death.
Scott O'Connor, aged 36, was convicted of manslaughter but acquitted of murder. Alongside his prison term, he was given an extended licence period of five years. Zoe Coutts, 35, the boy's mother, was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child.

Details of the Abuse and Death
Southwark Crown Court was informed that four-year-old Kol Page died in June 2024 after enduring escalating violence while in the care of O'Connor and Coutts in Bromley, south-east London, beginning in April 2022. Both defendants had falsely attributed Kol's injuries to accidents.
On 25 April 2022, emergency services responded to a call at the family home and discovered Kol unresponsive with severe head injuries. Medical examinations later confirmed internal injuries consistent with violent assault.
Kol suffered catastrophic brain damage, necessitating constant care. He remained hospitalized for 14 months before being placed in foster care. Ultimately, he died in June 2024 due to the severity of his injuries.
Denials and Evidence of Abuse
Both O'Connor and Coutts denied responsibility and provided inconsistent accounts. However, evidence demonstrated that the couple had repeatedly abused the child. Coutts described Kol as simply "clumsy" before accusing O'Connor of sexually abusing her son and asserting that he alone was responsible for the injuries.
The child endured physical abuse over several months, while the couple misled family and friends by claiming Kol was frequently "falling off things and bumping into things."
Investigation and Police Findings
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police analyzed mobile phone data, revealing that O'Connor had been at the family home 28 times in the month preceding Kol's death, staying overnight on 16 occasions. This was despite Coutts residing in accommodation designated for victims of domestic abuse that prohibited male visitors.
The cause of death was attributed to the severe injuries inflicted during this period.
Prosecutors described the injuries as "catastrophic," comparable to those sustained in a serious road traffic collision or a fall from height onto a hard surface.
Official Statement from Lead Investigator
"Kol was an innocent little boy who suffered horrific abuse in the place where he should have been safest - at home with his mother.
Coutts and her new boyfriend, O'Connor, tried to deceive paramedics, doctors and police officers, repeating lie after lie about how Kol came to be so seriously injured.
It was the tireless work of detectives that exposed the couple's lies, combing through months of messages, appalling pictures and CCTV evidence to uncover the sustained abuse suffered by that little boy."
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, whose homicide team led the investigation, made these remarks highlighting the extensive efforts to uncover the truth behind Kol's injuries.
