Casualties from Israeli Air Strikes in Southern Lebanon

Israeli air strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 19 individuals in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Among the fatalities, ten people—including three children and three women—were killed in a single strike targeting a residence in the town of Deir Qanoun, the ministry reported.

Background of the Conflict

Lebanon became involved in the conflict on 2 March, following rocket attacks by Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed Shia Islamist group, against Israel. These attacks were in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran's supreme leader.

The recent fatalities occurred less than a week after the United States announced that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to extend a ceasefire by 45 days, with plans for the two parties to resume negotiations in early June.

Despite the ceasefire extension, exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have persisted, particularly in southern Lebanon.

Ongoing Hostilities and Civilian Impact

Israel states that its military operations target Hezbollah; however, civilian casualties, including women and children, have frequently occurred. Hezbollah has responded by firing rockets and deploying drones into communities in northern Israel and against Israeli forces occupying parts of southern Lebanon.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military announced the death of another soldier due to a Hezbollah attack in southern Lebanon.

Details on Casualties and Injuries

In its statement, Lebanon's health ministry indicated that in addition to the fatalities in Deir Qanoun, three individuals were wounded, including a young girl.

Furthermore, nine people were killed and 29 injured in Israeli air strikes targeting the Nabatieh and Tyre districts, the ministry added.

The BBC has reached out to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for comment regarding these incidents.

The health ministry also reported on Monday that the total number of people killed in Lebanon by Israeli strikes since the conflict with Hezbollah began in March has exceeded 3,000.

Hezbollah's Military Actions

Hezbollah stated that its fighters "clashed ... with a force of the Israeli enemy army that tried to advance towards the vicinity of the town square of Haddatha," according to Agence France-Presse.

The group also reported destroying an Israeli tank during the engagement.

Additionally, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and on Iron Dome air defense systems near the northern Israel border, as reported by AFP.

Ceasefire Agreement and Military Positions

The ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States permits Israel to conduct strikes it asserts are aimed at countering Hezbollah's military activities.

Israeli ground forces continue to occupy a strip of land approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide along the Lebanese border, territory they seized during the conflict.
