Fatalities During Mexico City World Cup Celebrations
More than one million people gathered in Mexico City to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the World Cup knockout stages, according to the city government.
Among the crowd, three individuals died from suffocation during the celebrations on Tuesday, the capital's health authority reported on Wednesday. The victims included a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man.
The celebrations were centered mainly around the Angel of Independence monument in downtown Mexico City, marking the country's first World Cup knockout win since 1986.
City Mayor Clara Brugada extended her condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that support would be provided in the coming days.
Emergency Response and Medical Details
Health authorities indicated that emergency services attended to three unconscious individuals at various locations along Paseo de la Reforma before transporting them to hospitals.
"After performing first aid and CPR techniques on the patients, they were transferred to a hospital for specialised medical care,"
the city's health authority stated. All three victims were confirmed to have died from suffocation and were identified by their families.
Official Statements and Public Warnings
Following the announcement of the fatalities, Mayor Brugada posted on social media urging fans to celebrate responsibly.
"Always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy,"
she wrote.
Mexico's victory ignited widespread celebrations at the Estadio Azteca and throughout large parts of the city, with fireworks visible well after the final whistle.
Before the match, Mayor Brugada had advised fans intending to watch the game near the Angel of Independence monument to seek alternative locations due to the already large crowds gathered there.
