Scottish Man Sentenced for Migrant Smuggling Attempt in France

A Scottish man has been imprisoned in France following an attempt to smuggle migrants by boat into the United Kingdom.

John Frizell, a 46-year-old from Glasgow, was apprehended in Normandy in April when authorities discovered five migrants aboard his vessel, including a three-year-old girl.

Prosecutors reported that six additional individuals were identified near the port, believed to be en route to the boat after each paying €1,000 (£867) for the crossing.

The Rouen court was informed that Frizell and another man, Andrew Walsh, had traveled to France with the intent of transporting people across the English Channel.

On Wednesday, Frizell received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, while Walsh was handed a 15-month suspended sentence.

Details of the Arrest and Legal Proceedings

The court heard that the pair were detained on the night of April 8-9 in Saint-Valéry-en-Caux, located in northwest France.

They had arrived from the UK aboard an 8-meter (26-foot) sailboat and were suspected of planning a return trip carrying approximately 10 migrants of Syrian or Pakistani origin.

Defense lawyers for Frizell and Walsh sought acquittal, arguing that the boat had neither departed nor even left the dock.

However, the public prosecutor characterized the men as

"smugglers" who had "made the journey for this purpose"
.

Both Frizell and Walsh were issued permanent bans from entering French territory.

Official Response

A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated:

"We are in contact with the local authorities regarding this case, and our consular staff are in touch with one British national."
