Drone Incident in Romania

A Russian drone struck an apartment building in Romania, according to the country's defence ministry early on Friday. The impact caused a fire and resulted in injuries to two individuals.

The incident occurred in the eastern city of Galati amid ongoing Russian attacks in Ukraine near the border, the ministry reported in an official statement.

The Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations indicated that the drone's entire explosive payload detonated upon impact, igniting a fire on the 10th floor of the residential structure.

Context and Reactions

Russian drones have crossed into Romanian airspace multiple times during the four-year conflict with Ukraine. However, this marks the first occasion where Romanian citizens have sustained injuries. Russia has not issued any statement regarding the event.

"This incident represents a serious and irresponsible escalation on the part of the Russian Federation," Romania's foreign ministry stated. The ministry also noted that Bucharest had informed the NATO secretary general and requested measures to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania.

Emergency Response and Military Actions

Emergency services reported that two people received medical treatment for abrasions. Approximately 70 residents were evacuated as firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Following detection of the drones in Romanian airspace, two F-16 fighter jets were deployed, the defence ministry confirmed.

"One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galati, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, with the impact triggering a fire," the ministry added.

Geographical and Historical Context

The nearby River Danube serves as the border with Ukraine, where Russian air attacks frequently target Ukrainian ports.

In April, a similar incident occurred when a Russian drone caused material damage in Galati but did not result in injuries.

Romania's defence ministry has documented that since the onset of the war in Ukraine, fragments from drones have been discovered on Romanian soil 47 times, including 12 occurrences in the current year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Related Developments in Ukraine

Meanwhile, a nationwide air raid alert was issued overnight in Ukraine. Officials in the southern region reported that the port of Izmail in the Odesa area was targeted by a drone attack early on Friday.

Additionally, in a Russian-controlled sector of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, three utility workers were killed during a Ukrainian drone strike on Thursday. The Kremlin-appointed head of the region, Denis Pushilin, reported the incident via the Telegram messaging platform.

A fourth individual was seriously injured in the attack, Pushilin stated.
