Newborn Vicuna Cria Named Xoco at Highland Wildlife Park

Pictures have been made public of a baby vicuna, known as a cria, born last month at the Highland Wildlife Park in Kincraig.

Keepers confirmed the female cria was born on 18 June to parents Juanita and Austria.

They have named the one-month-old female Xoco, a name derived from Nahuatl meaning "little sister" or "the youngest child".

Vicunas and Their Habitat

Vicunas are the smallest members of the camel family and are relatives of llamas and alpacas. They are indigenous to the high alpine regions of the Andes Mountains in South America.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) continues to experience a recent "baby boom" among its animals.

Alongside Xoco, two rare snow leopard cubs have been born at the park, as well as Himalayan monals and red deer. Edinburgh Zoo has also welcomed Bru the capybara, Snoot the giant armadillo, and Atty the sloth.
