Casualties Reported After Overnight Attacks
At least four individuals have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in Ukraine following a significant overnight offensive by Russian forces.
The fatalities occurred in Dnipro, including a 73-year-old woman. Local officials reported five injuries in Dnipro, eight in Kharkiv, and four in Kyiv as a result of the Russian missile strikes in the early hours of Tuesday.
Kyiv Under Attack
Thousands sought shelter in Kyiv as large smoke plumes emerged from the city center due to missile impacts.
"Explosions in the city. Air defence forces are working! Stay in shelters!" said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The head of Kyiv's City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, stated, "the enemy is striking with ballistic missiles".
Klitschko also noted that two high-rise apartment buildings were struck, raising concerns that individuals might be trapped beneath the debris.
During the early morning hours, the sounds of drones were audible amid more than a dozen loud explosions as the strikes hit Kyiv.
Reports have indicated blackouts and fires across the city, though the full scope of the damage remains unclear.
Additional Targets and Context
An industrial facility in Zaporizhzhia was also attacked during the same period.
The strikes follow warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, who reiterated the possibility of a large-scale Russian attack and urged citizens to remain vigilant regarding air raid alerts.
"Intelligence warnings regarding Russian strikes remain in effect. A massive strike is possible, they have prepared one," Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.
Last week, Russia announced plans to target military and decision-making centers in Kyiv and advised foreigners to evacuate the city.
Russia declared it would conduct "systematic strikes" in retaliation for a drone attack last month on a dormitory in Ukraine's Russian-held Luhansk region that resulted in 21 deaths. Ukraine has denied responsibility for that attack.
