US Government Removes Export Controls on Anthropic's AI Tools

The US government has lifted export controls on Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools, weeks after ordering the company to restrict access due to national security concerns, Anthropic announced.

In a social media post, Anthropic stated that it will begin restoring access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on Wednesday following notification from the US Department of Commerce that export controls on these two models have been lifted.

These models represent the firm's most advanced AI tools, which were abruptly suspended on 12 June amid concerns that hackers could exploit them to identify vulnerabilities in computer systems.

The BBC has reached out to the Department of Commerce for comment regarding the decision.

Details on Anthropic's AI Models

Mythos and Fable are AI models developed by Anthropic on its Claude platform, which competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

Fable 5 is designed for the consumer market, featuring capabilities for deep reasoning and the ability to perform complex tasks autonomously.

Mythos 5 targets businesses and cybersecurity professionals, with functionality to detect and exploit vulnerabilities in computer code.

Background on the Suspension and Government Concerns

Anthropic previously indicated that US authorities had not specified particular concerns about its technology when ordering the suspension of both platforms globally.

"Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or 'jailbreaking' Fable 5,"

the company said at the time, referring to a process that circumvents software safety restrictions to unlock features.

"However, we disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people."
