Expert Review of the Best Pressure Washers for Outdoor Cleaning

Our expert evaluates top power washers on challenging outdoor tasks, including heavily soiled paving slabs and decking.

The best lawnmowers to keep your grass in check

Maintaining outdoor spaces can be time-consuming. While garden tools help manage greenery, cleaning patios, decking, and outdoor furniture often requires significant effort, especially when relying on traditional methods like buckets of soapy water and scrubbing brushes.

Pressure washers offer an efficient solution. These devices connect to a hose and spray water at high pressure to remove stubborn stains such as bird droppings and accumulated dirt from hard surfaces quickly. With suitable attachments, they can also be used to clean vehicles like cars, bikes, and boats.

At a glance

  • Best pressure washer overall: Ava Go P40
  • Best budget pressure washer: Kärcher K 2 Classic
  • Best cordless pressure washer: Stihl REA 60 Plus
  • Best for high-power deep cleaning: Bosch UniversalAquatak 135

Why you should trust me

I have extensive experience testing various cleaning devices, including mops, hard-floor and carpet cleaners, and robotic cleaners for indoor and outdoor tasks. Living in a busy household with many dirty surfaces, including a large patio and a heavily soiled car, provided ample opportunity to test these pressure washers thoroughly.

How I tested

I selected eight pressure washers of different types and price points from multiple manufacturers and subjected each to identical cleaning tests. The first test involved cleaning a dirty paving slab beside my house, an area frequently used for washing my dog and thus heavily soiled.

Next, I tested the washers on decking. Since I do not own a deck, I located a neighbour with a deck that had not been cleaned deeply for several years, making it an ideal test subject. This was the wettest cleaning task, and my neighbour appreciated the thorough cleaning provided.

I then cleaned the wheels of my car, washing half of each wheel with different washers to compare their effectiveness.

Where applicable, I experimented with various attachments and settings, including cleaning empty water butts, removing algae from a garden whirligig, and using foam cannons on my car.

All pressure washers were provided by manufacturers, most of whom will collect them after testing. Those not collected will be donated to a Chesham-based charity that refurbishes tools and distributes them to training centres and self-help organisations in Africa and the UK.

The best pressure washers in 2026

Best pressure washer overall: Ava Go P40

Ava, a Norwegian manufacturer, offers affordable, durable pressure washers with a 10-year warranty. The P40 is an excellent entry-level model designed with user experience in mind, featuring a kink-free steel-lined hose and robust, easy-release clips.

A standout feature is the extendable lance, which adjusts from 84cm to 116cm with a button press, reducing the need to bend during floor cleaning.

The reviewed kit included two nozzles—a variable nozzle for adjusting spray width and pressure, and a turbo nozzle for tough cleaning—as well as a foam cannon. Paired with Ava’s detergents, it performed well across all tests, including car cleaning.

However, it is less powerful than some competitors, making it less effective on the most stubborn dirt on hard surfaces.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, drains/guttering, vehicles
Pressure hose length: 6m
Weight: 4.5kg
Corded or cordless: corded
Cleaning power: 11,313 cleaning units (6.5 litres/min x 1,740PSI)
Attachments included: zoom lance, turbo nozzle, vario nozzle, foam cannon
Warranty: 10 years

Best budget pressure washer: Kärcher K 2 Classic

Kärcher leads the market in pressure washer sales, and the K 2 Classic’s low price reflects its appeal for occasional users. Despite its affordability, it delivers effective cleaning power.

While it lacks the sophisticated design and build quality of pricier models like Ava and Bosch, it includes two nozzles: a fixed-angle light spray and a powerful rotating turbo nozzle. The turbo nozzle excelled on paving slabs, and the lighter nozzle worked well on car wheels.

Build quality is basic; the pressure hose tends to remain curled, and the lightweight unit is prone to tipping over.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, drains/guttering, vehicles
Pressure hose length: 3m
Weight: 3.2kg
Corded or cordless: corded
Cleaning power: 9,573 cleaning units (6 litres/min x 1,595PSI)
Attachments included: single spray lance, dirt blaster lance
Warranty: five years

Best cordless pressure washer: Stihl REA 60 Plus

Cordless pressure washers often sacrifice power and cost more, but Stihl’s REA 60 Plus delivers pressure comparable to corded models, albeit with a premium battery price.

During testing, it impressed with high pressure close to corded levels. The battery drains quickly at full power, but a power dial allows pressure adjustment for longer use and delicate tasks. The nozzle offers three jet types: fan, rotary, and cleaning agent, the latter fed via a side hose.

The REA 60 Plus also features a pressure hose reel for neat storage, clips for the lance and gun, and no power cord, enhancing tidiness.

However, the unit does not include a battery or charger, adding approximately £197 to the total cost.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, drains/guttering, vehicles, away from home
Pressure hose length: 5m
Weight: 6.7kg
Corded or cordless: cordless
Quoted battery run time: 25 minutes
Cleaning power: 8,485 cleaning units (4.5 litres/min x 1,885PSI)
Attachments included: 3-in-1 nozzle
Warranty: three years

Best for high-power deep cleaning: Bosch UniversalAquatak 135

The Bosch UniversalAquatak 135 is a corded model balancing high pressure, reasonable cost, and practical design.

Its high maximum pressure and flow rate enabled quick removal of dirt from all tested surfaces. Assembly is straightforward and tool-free, involving attaching wheels and the handle. Despite wheels, it is not heavy or bulky, allowing easy transport.

The unit includes a single nozzle with three jet settings—fan, rotary, and pencil—to adjust pressure as needed.

However, the 7m pressure hose tends to remain curled, and it lacks the extendable lance and extended warranty offered by the Ava P40.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, drains/guttering, vehicles
Pressure hose length: 7m
Weight: 6.9kg
Corded or cordless: corded
Cleaning power: 14,685 cleaning units (7.5 litres/min x 1,958PSI)
Attachments included: 3-in-1 nozzle, 450ml detergent nozzle
Warranty: three years

The best of the rest

Ryobi 18V cordless One+ HP brushless power washer

Best for: weight and portability

The Ryobi 18V One+ is lightweight and quick to set up. It connects directly to the hose at the lance, eliminating the need for a pressure hose but requiring dragging the garden hose during use. It also includes a hose for siphoning water from alternative sources, enhancing portability for tasks like cleaning equipment after boating.

Its pressure is lower than the top models, making it suitable for lighter cleaning tasks but less effective on heavy dirt.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, drains/guttering, vehicles, bikes, away from home
Pressure hose length: N/A
Weight: 2.7kg
Corded or cordless: cordless
Quoted battery runtime: 18 minutes
Cleaning power: 1,607 cleaning units (2.6 litres/min x 595PSI)
Attachments included: 3-in-1 nozzle, 6m siphoning hose, 18V battery and charger
Warranty: three years

Bosch UniversalAquatak 36V-100

Best for: an affordable cordless pressure washer

This battery-powered Bosch model offers cleaning power between the Stihl and Ryobi. It is more affordable than the Stihl and offers some portability, suitable for garden and mobile use.

It includes similar equipment to the mains-powered Bosch, such as a three-in-one nozzle and a clip-on detergent tank for foam application.

It is less portable than the Ryobi and less compact than the Stihl.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, vehicles, away from home
Pressure hose length: 4m
Weight: 4.7kg
Corded or cordless: cordless
Quoted battery run time: 45 minutes
Cleaning power: 4,496 cleaning units (3.1 litres/min x 1,450PSI)
Attachments included: 3-in-1 nozzle
Warranty: three years

Kärcher K 3 Classic

Best for: a better-built version of the K 2

The K 3 offers improved build quality and slightly better pressure and flow rate than the K 2, with features like wheels and an extendable handle. However, cleaning performance differences were minimal in tests.

It is a better option than the K 2 but less compelling than the Ava P40 or Bosch UniversalAquatak 135 for a small additional cost.

Suitable for: patio, decking/fences, garden tools, garden furniture, vehicles
Pressure hose length: 6m
Weight: 3.8kg
Corded or cordless: corded
Cleaning power: 11,023 cleaning units (6.3 litres/min x 1,740PSI)
Attachments included: single spray lance, dirt blaster lance
Warranty: five years

Titan TTB1800PRW

The Titan TTB1800PRW from Screwfix is a powerful, affordable pressure washer, offering the highest cleaning power among tested models for under £100. It includes two nozzles and a patio cleaning brush, though the brush was less effective than the roto nozzle during testing.

Assembly requires a screwdriver, and the extendable handle lacks a locking mechanism, which can be inconvenient.

Suitable for: patio, garden tools, vehicles
Pressure hose length: 6m
Weight: 7.1kg
Corded or cordless: corded
Cleaning power: 14,891 cleaning units (7.3 litres/min x 2,031PSI)
Attachments included: vario fan nozzle, roto nozzle, patio cleaner
Warranty: two years

What you need to know

What to look out for

Hoses

Pressure washers include a high-pressure hose connecting the pump to the spray gun. For frequent use, anti-tangle or premium hoses are recommended for easier handling. Standard hoses may require frequent untwisting.

Connecting the washer to your water supply requires a garden hose with a standard 0.5in quick-connect fitting compatible with most UK systems, including Hozelock. Solid plastic hoses are preferable to expandable types to avoid kinks and maintain water flow.

Portable washers may come with a short hose for use with alternative water sources.

Nozzles

Nozzles attach to the spray gun and vary spray angle and pressure. Narrow sprays provide high pressure for precision cleaning, while fan sprays cover larger areas with less pressure, suitable for delicate surfaces. Some nozzles are variable.

Turbo or dirt-blaster nozzles rotate water jets over a wider area, combining power and speed.

Attachments

Many washers offer accessories, some included and others sold separately. Common attachments include detergent reservoirs for applying soap and brushes or mops for gentle cleaning of patios, decking, and vehicles.

Bundles including desired attachments often provide better value than purchasing separately.

How do you use a pressure washer?

Pressure washers connect to a water supply, pressurize water with an electric motor, and spray it through a gun attached by a pressure hose. All tested models use universal garden hose fittings compatible with common UK connectors.

After connecting water and powering the unit, select the appropriate nozzle or setting and activate the spray gun trigger to clean surfaces.

What safety equipment do you need?

High-pressure water can cause debris to fly. Safety glasses, long trousers, sturdy shoes, gloves, and waterproof clothing are recommended during use.

What is a good pressure for home use?

Heavy-duty cleaning, like concrete paving, requires pressures over 100 bar (1,450PSI). Softer surfaces such as wood decking need lower pressure settings to avoid damage. Testing on a small area first is advised.

Car washing should use low-pressure fan or rinse settings from a safe distance. Foam cannons help apply detergent safely without damaging the washer.

Are pressure washers noisy?

Pressure washers are quieter than lawnmowers and hedge trimmers, with no need for ear protection, though neighbours may notice their use.

Can I rent a power washer instead?

Renting is practical for occasional use or limited storage. National and local hire services offer pressure washers, often including powerful models that are costly to buy.

Should I put detergent in my power washer?

Detergent should never be added through the main water inlet to avoid damage. Use washers with separate detergent reservoirs or attachments designed for safe soap application, following manufacturer guidelines.

Can you clean your patio without using a pressure washer?

Yes. Soapy water and a stiff brush can clean patios, with white vinegar effective on stubborn stains, taking care to protect plants. Products that prevent algae build-up are also available but require dry conditions and pet safety precautions.
