Youngest Competitor Shines at Crufts
The youngest competitor at the world's largest dog show is celebrating after delivering an impressive performance that surpassed her own mother’s achievements.
Four-year-old Caitlyn participated at Crufts over the weekend with her eight-year-old miniature schnauzer, Zeeva, earning a 'highly commended' award for their efforts.
Upon hearing the news, the young dog handler ran straight to her mother and fellow competitor Lydia Mellor to give her a
"big hug".

Lydia, from Groesffordd near Brecon, Powys, remarked on the affectionate gesture, saying:
"Whatever she does I get a massive hug afterwards. More so when she beats me."
Caitlyn was the youngest participant at the event held at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre. She finished in fifth place in the veteran bitch class alongside Zeeva.
Lydia, competing in the same category with their 11-year-old miniature schnauzer Hope, did not receive a placing.
Family's Dedication and Early Start
Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Caitlyn proudly displayed her rosette and certificate acknowledging her performance.
Lydia, aged 37, shared that the dog-loving family started their day early, being "up and showered" by 04:30, and Caitlyn did not fall asleep until they returned home at 19:30.
Caitlyn qualified for Crufts at just three years old after securing a placement at the Three Counties Championship Show in June.
She attended her first dog show at eight weeks old and by the age of two expressed a desire to enter the ring alongside her mother, who has been involved in dog showing since she was 10 years old.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Lydia described herself as a typical "dog-mad child" and admitted to being "addicted" to the sport ever since.
It appears Caitlyn is following in her mother’s footsteps.
Lydia previously commented on her daughter’s abilities and passion:
"She is so confident generally and she works so well with the dogs. She loves the dogs,"
Zeeva is one of four white miniature schnauzers owned and shown by the family. The dog shares a close bond with Caitlyn, even sleeping in her bed.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
The youngest Crufts winner on record is believed to be Freddie, who was six years old when he won first place in the veteran breed category last year. Freddie is from Bobbington, Staffordshire.
Lydia expressed confidence in Caitlyn’s potential to become the next young winner at Crufts.
The annual competition, which began in 1891, features judging across various dog categories.
The 2026 event hosted more than 200 pedigree breeds and took place from March 5 to 8.
