National Museum Cardiff Considers Temporary Closure for Repairs

The National Museum in Cardiff was temporarily closed in February 2025 to carry out urgent repairs.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) has indicated it is in "early discussions" regarding the potential temporary closure of National Museum Cardiff to facilitate repair work.

The PCS stated that it understands Amgueddfa Cymru, the organization responsible for managing the site, is "considering the possibility" of a temporary closure but emphasized that "no final decisions have been made" at this stage.

In February of the previous year, the museum building was closed for a few days due to "immediate maintenance work" requirements. The Director General had previously warned that the site might need to close again to address its "deteriorating condition."

Amgueddfa Cymru has confirmed that any planned decision to temporarily close the museum building "will be subject to a full review and consultation process."

Following rumors circulating on social media concerning the future of National Museum Cardiff, the PCS, which represents 188 staff members, confirmed it is engaged in early discussions with the employer about the potential closure and its implications.

In a statement provided to the BBC, the union said it is discussing "the impact on staff, the protection of collections and the future operation of the museum."

"Until those discussions have progressed further, it would be premature to speculate on the length of any closure or the implications for our members."

The museum receives the majority of its funding from the Welsh government. In 2024, Amgueddfa Cymru confirmed a £60 million investment in preventative and backlog maintenance identified as essential over the next decade.

An audit report published in November 2025 noted that the museum's workforce has already been reduced by approximately 25% due to a voluntary severance scheme and additional staff departures.

Despite these measures, there remain warnings about broader economic factors increasing operational costs alongside a "real term" funding reduction. Previously, management had cautioned that the museum might be forced to close due to its "deteriorating conditions."

In a statement, an Amgueddfa Cymru spokesperson described the maintenance of the historic building as an "ongoing challenge" ahead of its centenary next year.

"We are looking at options for potential improvement and redevelopment... ensuring it is fit for purpose for future generations,"

the spokesperson added.

They also reiterated that any closure would be subject to "a full review and consultation" involving the museum's "staff, volunteers, visitors and the wider community."

'In the meantime, we have recently appointed a design team, external which means that enabling works which are needed for maintenance purposes can now be carried out in earnest and concept options for the future explored.'

The Welsh government acknowledged awareness of the social media claims but stressed that "no decisions have been taken" regarding a closure.

"Any decision on options will be subject to a number of factors including a full consultation."
