Highland Council Plans Cultural Assembly for UK City of Culture Bid

Highland Council intends to organize an event this summer aimed at advancing its bid for the UK City of Culture 2029.

Inverness-Highland stands as the sole Scottish contender on the long list of candidates competing for this prestigious award.

The winning location will be announced later this year and will receive £10 million to support a year-long programme of cultural activities that highlight its "local strengths and stories."

To facilitate this, Highland Council has proposed the creation of a "cultural assembly" designed to bring together artists, businesses, and tourism organizations to discuss and develop the bid further.

This proposal will be presented to councillors for approval at a meeting scheduled for next week.

Other cities competing for the title include Blackpool, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon, and Wrexham.

Previous winners of the UK City of Culture award include Bradford, Hull, and Derry-Londonderry.

The competition is a collaborative initiative developed by the UK government alongside the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

It is administered by the UK government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Highland Council emphasized that its bid represents an opportunity to "strengthen connections" between Inverness, the Highlands, and visitors to the region.

In an official report, council officials stated:

"It offers a platform to deepen understanding of the region's cultural richness and contemporary identity, building on its established appeal and reinforcing its position as a distinctive place to visit."
