US Gas Prices Reach $4 Amid Iran Conflict

The average price of gasoline at the pump in the United States has surpassed $4 for the first time in nearly four years, driven by ongoing tensions related to the Iran war which continue to elevate fuel costs.

According to the AAA motoring organisation, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline now stands at $4.02, representing an increase of over one dollar since the onset of the conflict. Diesel prices have also risen significantly, currently about $1.70 higher than before.

Impact of Strait of Hormuz Closure

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route, over the past month has caused disruptions in the production and transportation of energy resources throughout the Middle East. This disruption has contributed to a surge in crude oil prices, a key component in the production of gasoline and diesel fuels.

Prior to the conflict's commencement on 28 February, the average US gas price was approximately $2.98 per gallon, while diesel averaged around $3.76 per gallon. Presently, diesel prices have reached an average of $5.45 per gallon.

Additional Factors Influencing Prices

Beyond elevated crude oil costs, the AAA highlighted that increased demand for gasoline during the spring break season last week has also played a role in pushing pump prices higher.

The $4.02 figure represents a national average; however, some states have already experienced gas prices exceeding $4 per gallon.

Despite the recent rise, current average prices remain below the record highs recorded in June 2022, when gas peaked at $5.01 and diesel at $5.81, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Global Effects of Rising Energy Prices

Higher wholesale energy prices tend to impact fuel pump prices first, a trend observable not only in the US but globally.

In the United Kingdom, average petrol prices have increased by 14%, and diesel prices by 27% since the beginning of the Iran conflict.

Some nations have responded with fuel rationing measures; for example, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have implemented such controls, and Slovenia recently became the first European Union country to introduce fuel rationing last week.
