Fusion Lifestyle Enters Administration
A charity operating multiple leisure centres and swimming pools across England has entered administration. Fusion Lifestyle announced on 1 April that it had appointed administrators following a "prolonged period of financial difficulty."
The organisation stated it had "collaborated closely with local authorities to explore viable options," with many councils agreeing to keep facilities open during the transition period. Memberships remain active and scheduled activities will continue, according to Fusion.
Financial Challenges and Causes
Headquartered in Dartford, Kent, Fusion Lifestyle attributed its financial struggles to "rising operational costs, reduced government funding, and post-pandemic recovery challenges." The charity also noted it had "made significant attempts to introduce new funding" which were unsuccessful.
The government was contacted for comment regarding the situation.
Facility Closures and Council Responses
The City of London Corporation announced that the Golden Lane Sports and Fitness Centre, previously operated by Fusion, will close after 30 April. The corporation is investigating options to maintain the use of tennis courts at the site and is exploring "local alternatives for centre users" ahead of a planned refurbishment scheduled for December.
"The leisure centre's current condition combined with the short time frame before the planned closure in December, meant no financially viable alternative to closure could be identified,"
Fusion stated that administrators S&W Partners are seeking new operators to take over its other leisure centres, which remain open.
Ongoing Operations and Management Transitions
Facilities still in operation include those managed under agreements with local councils. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council reported that Serco Leisure, in partnership with Leisure Solutions Community Trust, will assume management of its facilities once a handover date is established.
"Since learning they may be experiencing financial difficulties the council has been exploring options to get the best outcome for residents,"
Lambeth Council indicated that its operator, Active Lambeth, will take over management of Brockwell Lido from 1 July.
West Devon Council confirmed that Parkwood Leisure will take over Meadowlands Leisure Centre in Tavistock and Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton following the awarding of a short-term contract.
Charnwood Borough Council stated that its planned heating upgrade at Loughborough Leisure Centre remains unaffected by the administration.
