Andrew Ranken, Drummer of The Pogues, Passes Away at 72
The Pogues drummer Andrew Ranken has died at the age of 72, the band announced.
Ranken was a founding member of the London-based music group and contributed to some of the band's most famous songs, including Fairytale of New York and Dirty Old Town.
In an online statement, the band described Ranken, who passed away on Tuesday, as the "heartbeat of The Pogues."
"Andrew, thank you for everything, for your friendship, your wit and your generosity of spirit, and of course for the music, forever a true friend and brother," the statement reads.
"Our thoughts and love are with his family at this sad and difficult time."
Nicknamed "The Clobberer," Ranken played drums, percussion, harmonica, and provided vocals for The Pogues during the 1990s and 2000s.
Formed in 1982, The Pogues' most iconic lineup included the late singer Shane MacGowan, bassist Cait O'Riordan, singer and tin whistle player Spider Stacy, banjo player Jem Finer, accordion player James Fearnley, and Andrew Ranken.
