Netflix Announces KPop Demon Hunters Sequel
Netflix has revealed plans for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the streaming service's most viewed movie to date.
This new installment is the inaugural project under the exclusive multi-year agreement between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
The announcement follows critical acclaim for the original film, which is anticipated to secure wins at the upcoming Oscars ceremony, where it holds nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
The song "Golden" earned a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking the first time a K-pop track has received this honor at the prestigious music awards.
Plot and Characters
The original movie centers on Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of the K-pop group Huntr/x, who navigate the challenges of fame alongside their clandestine roles as demon hunters.
Directors' Perspective
In Netflix's social media announcement, co-director Maggie Kang expressed her pride and enthusiasm:
"I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters."
"There's so much more to this world we have built and I'm excited to show you. This is only the beginning."
Musical Contributions and Hopes for the Sequel
Kim Eun-jae, professionally known as Ejae, who provides the singing voice for Rumi and co-wrote "Golden" along with other tracks, shared her aspirations for the sequel in a recent BBC interview.
She hopes to introduce new musical styles and showcase diverse facets of Korean music:
"It depends on what they create and hopefully, you know, we can show more sides of Korea,"
"There's so many different kinds of music in Korea, so that's what I'm hoping for personally."
Ejae reflected on the overwhelming response to the animation and its soundtrack:
"A lot is happening so I'm trying to digest everything but it's really hard to digest,"
"It's crazy."

Zhun, a South Korean music producer involved with the track "Golden," also conveyed his enthusiasm to the BBC, emphasizing the desire to maintain the energy of the original film.
"I want to continue the high energy that we brought to the first film,"
He added that integrating music with the film's visual elements was a key source of creative energy:
"[The] visual elements in the film gave us so much energy."
Cultural Impact and Reception
Since its release last summer, KPop Demon Hunters has become a cultural phenomenon, notably as a rare K-pop-related production to penetrate mainstream Western markets, including the United States.
Although primarily produced in English, the American production incorporates Asian iconography, cuisine, and Korean language elements to highlight its South Korean heritage.
The film has garnered significant critical acclaim and awards recognition, including wins for Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.
It remains a contender for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, competing against titles such as Disney's Zootopia 2 and Elio.
In January, Netflix reported that KPop Demon Hunters had surpassed platform records with over 480 million views within six months of release.
The song "Golden" achieved the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the animation's most popular track.
