Posthumous Publication of Peter Lawson's Final Book
The final book by Peter Lawson, an author and illustrator renowned for his work on beloved children's characters such as Thomas the Tank Engine and Winnie the Pooh, has been published after his death. Lawson passed away in 2023 following a 21-month battle with bowel cancer. During this period, he wrote On Big Bear's Shoulders, which is now being released on World Book Day to support the Ty Hafan children's hospice.

Peter Lawson was known for his strong belief that the words "children" and "hospice" should never be mentioned together, a sentiment that inspired the fundraising initiative linked to the book's publication.
Family Reflections and Book's Purpose
His daughter, Thea Lawson, shared her thoughts on the book's impact and her father's intentions.
"If one child reads the book and feels less frightened, or forgets they're unwell for a while, then it has done exactly what he hoped."
Peter Lawson, who hailed from Cardiff, had a distinguished 35-year career in children's literature. Beyond Winnie the Pooh and Thomas the Tank Engine, he illustrated characters including Fireman Sam, Postman Pat, Dora the Explorer, and Barbie.
The Message of On Big Bear's Shoulders
Thea explained that the book encourages children to explore imaginative worlds even during difficult times.
"In many ways On Big Bear's Shoulders is about reassurance," she told Radio Wales Breakfast.
"It tells a child that you are safe, someone is holding you, and this moment won't last forever.
He didn't want the story to be about illness or dying.
He wanted it to be about safety, about being carried when you're too small to understand what's happening around you."
Thea, who works in an Accident & Emergency department, noted that while she witnesses suffering daily, this book represents a different kind of care.
"This is the part of care that isn't clinical, it's comfort," she said.
"I think it's extraordinary that Dad spent the final chapter of his own life thinking about people he believed needed comfort more than he did.
Dad was determined that Ty Hafan should never have to worry about resources, and that the children there would feel joy as well as care.
Dad always believed stories outlive people. In a way, this is him still helping families he will never meet, which I think is the most beautiful legacy you can leave."

Peter Lawson's Support for Ty Hafan
Peter Lawson demonstrated his commitment to Ty Hafan through various efforts, including participating in a charity bike ride from Cardiff to St Andrews in Scotland in 2021, just three months before his diagnosis.
