Suranne Jones to Return as Gemma Foster

Actress Suranne Jones has expressed her enthusiasm for filming the third and final series of Doctor Foster. The BBC has officially confirmed the drama's return with five new episodes, marking nine years since the second series was broadcast.

Jones will reprise her role as Gemma Foster, a general practitioner who remains in the same home and is preparing for a new chapter in her life with an upcoming marriage. However, as the wedding approaches, unresolved issues from her past begin to resurface, posing risks to her happiness and reputation, according to the BBC.

Jones said: "When I got the call to ask if I wanted to return as Gemma Foster, I knew the time was right. We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom - Gemma and Simon's runaway son - to return as an adult with questions. For me, this time around, it's about accountability and questioning - can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward? Gemma and Simon have so much to unpick!"

Returning Cast and Series Background

Bertie Carvel will return as Simon, while Tom Taylor will portray Tom in the new series. The original series, which aired in 2015, introduced Gemma Foster, a doctor in the fictional town of Parminster, who discovers her husband Simon's infidelity. The second series followed in 2017, culminating in a finale watched by nearly 10 million viewers.

Both series received National Television Awards, and Suranne Jones won the Best Actress award at the 2016 BAFTA TV Awards.

Production Details and Creative Team

Filming for the third series is scheduled to begin in Hertfordshire later this spring. Mike Bartlett returns as the writer, creator, and executive producer of the show.

Bartlett commented: "I always hoped that we'd get to tell the final part of Gemma's story, which is about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world."
He added there would be "secrets, betrayals, vengeance and perhaps one last dinner party", referencing a notable scene from the second series.

The BBC has stated that the broadcast date for the final series will be announced in due course.
