Christian Bale's Dance and Musical Influences for New Role

Christian Bale, widely recognized for his performances in American Psycho and the Batman series, has revealed a surprising new aspect of his latest film role that involves dancing. In an interview with NME, Bale expressed his enthusiasm for dancing despite considering himself "not much of a dancer." He cited bands such as the Manic Street Preachers as key inspirations for his portrayal of Frankenstein's monster.

Bale, originally from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, takes on the iconic character in the gothic romance film The Bride!, where Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley stars as the bride. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal encouraged Bale to continuously share music that influenced his performance, requesting "tunes, tunes, tunes all the time."

Musical Inspirations and Preparation

For his 54th film, Bale immersed himself in "straight up punk stuff," drawing inspiration from figures like Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers and Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols. He described Edwards and Vicious as fashion and performance icons who shaped his approach to the character.

"An early inspiration was Sid Vicious in the white jacket, walking down the steps and singing 'My Way'."
"Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers cutting '4 Real' into his arm [in front of a journalist] was another."

Richey Edwards, a native of Blackwood, disappeared on 1 February 1995. His car was found abandoned near the old Severn Bridge, but he has not been seen since. Edwards was legally declared dead in 2008.

Bale also shared other musical selections with Gyllenhaal, including tracks from rock bands such as the Osees, The Pogues, and Spaceman 3.

Music's Role in Bale's Life and Career

Despite his extensive acting career, Bale emphasized music as "the most essential art form" in his life. He acknowledged that he has never met any of the rock musicians who inspire him and expressed no desire to do so.

"I don't want to and I don't need to,"
"It's their art I'm interested in. I know that I'm a complete disappointment for anyone to meet because the best of me is in [the] film."

Film Release and Co-Star Jessie Buckley

Described by the Financial Times as a "match made in mayhem," Bale and Buckley portray Frankenstein's monster and his bride in the Warner Bros. production released on 6 March.

Buckley is among the frontrunners for the Best Actress award at this year's Academy Awards, following widespread critical acclaim for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet. When asked about receiving advice from Bale regarding Oscar speeches, Buckley revealed that he offered none.

"I winged mine and got no advice whatsoever," Bale told People.com.
"Any advice I give to anybody should go in one ear and out the other very quickly."
