Delays and Long Queues at Birmingham Airport
Passengers reported significant delays and described the situation as "chaos" at Birmingham Airport while attempting to travel for the bank holiday weekend.
Photographs captured extensive queues at the security checkpoint, with some travellers indicating they barely managed to board their flights on time.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport attributed the delays to "an unexpectedly high level of staff absence." They explained that this impacted the airport's ability to operate the full number of screening lanes necessary to handle passenger flow efficiently.
Passenger Experiences
Lisa Lewis, a traveller from Solihull, described the queues as the longest she had ever encountered.
"It was absolute chaos," she said. "I was fast tracked, and it took me nearly an hour to get through.
"It's a very unpleasant experience [and] I spoke to the man in charge at Security, and he said the problem was insufficient staff."
Bernadette Shortt, a BBC WM radio reporter who was also flying from the airport, characterized the security vetting process as "horrendous."
"Staff are really doing their best, but people visiting Birmingham Airport for the first time don't understand why they have to queue to get up to security and then there's a massive queue.
"It's just really embarrassing."
Historical Context and Additional Comments
Long queues and delays have been a recurring issue at Birmingham Airport in 2024, including a previous incident involving a technical problem in security.
On Friday morning, a traveller named Thomas from Nottinghamshire described the situation as "badly organised" and "not a good experience."
Airport Response
The airport spokesperson acknowledged the impact of staff absences on operations and apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.
"We recognise the impact this had on some passengers and apologise for the inconvenience caused."
