Summerville’s Strike Seals West Ham Victory at Craven Cottage
As West Ham supporters erupted in celebration at Craven Cottage, Crysencio Summerville remained composed, arms extended and smiling broadly. The Dutch forward had ample reason to be pleased after scoring his fifth Premier League goal of the season, securing a crucial 1-0 victory for the Hammers against Fulham.
Summerville’s decisive goal in the 65th minute was sufficient to bolster West Ham’s ongoing campaign to maintain their Premier League status for the 2025-26 season. This win also allowed them to gain two points over 17th-placed Nottingham Forest on the same evening.
"We have to fight until the end, that's what we did. I am very pleased to get the three points."
The forward, who had faced challenges with form and confidence since his transfer from Leeds United 18 months ago, has now scored seven goals in his last 10 appearances for West Ham, compared to just one in his initial 38 matches.
"I am in a good space. I love to play, I am just happy to be back and I try to show it every week," Summerville added.
"We have to keep going now. We took positives from the Liverpool game, we had lots of positives, the fans behind us are very pleased and we are going in the right direction - the only way is up."
It is not only Summerville who is gaining momentum as the season approaches its critical phase—West Ham themselves are showing improvement. The team has secured 14 of their 28 points this season in their last eight Premier League matches.
This strong run under manager Nuno Espirito Santo means that a victory against Manchester City in their next Premier League fixture on 14 March would lift West Ham out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.
‘We Are Improving Game by Game’
Despite conceding five goals to a struggling Liverpool side last Saturday, West Ham’s morale remained intact. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo chose to emphasize the positives from the Anfield match, where his team generated an expected goals (xG) value of 1.75, ahead of their trip to Fulham.
"We are improving game by game.
It can happen - games like Liverpool - but the confidence is there and the boys are working very hard, very committed knowing that the situation that we are [in] doesn't change anything.
We are focused on ourselves and keep going."
Upcoming Fixtures Present Challenges for West Ham
The atmosphere in the away section at Craven Cottage resembled that of a team celebrating survival on the final day of the Premier League season. However, West Ham still face nine remaining matches as they strive to avoid relegation to the Championship for the first time since 2011.
Their next fixture is against Brentford on Monday in the FA Cup fifth round. Following that, the schedule intensifies for the 2023 Conference League champions.
West Ham will face three of the Premier League’s current top four teams—Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa—as well as relegation rivals Wolves and Leeds United. The final match of the season against Leeds will be held at London Stadium.
Interestingly, five of the remaining nine fixtures are at home. However, London Stadium has often been an uneasy venue for West Ham this season, with protests against the club’s board and only three home wins contributing to a disconnected atmosphere.
While significant work remains for West Ham to secure their Premier League status, Summerville’s comments following the victory at Fulham suggest the team is moving in a positive direction.
"There is clearly plenty of work left if West Ham are to survive, but as Summerville suggest after Wednesday night's performance, the Hammers appear to be heading in one direction - up."
