Wales' World Cup Qualification Ends in Hyderabad
Wales' hopes of qualifying for the Hockey World Cup concluded following a narrow 3-2 defeat against Uruguay in Hyderabad, India. The result, combined with a 2-2 draw between hosts India and Scotland, confirmed Wales' elimination from the tournament.
The Welsh team started strongly with Anja Atkin scoring an early goal in the fourth minute. However, Uruguay responded quickly as Manuela Vilar equalised from a penalty corner in the second quarter, leaving the teams level at halftime.
In the third quarter, Agustina Diaz converted another penalty corner to give Uruguay the lead, which was extended by Teresa Viana later in the same quarter. Wales fought back in the fourth quarter when Rachel Goodwin scored from close range, capitalising on an impressive run by Betsan Thomas along the right side of the pitch. Despite this effort, the goal served as a consolation as Wales could not recover the deficit.
The draw between India and Scotland ensured that Wales could not surpass either team in the group standings. With only the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-final stages of qualifying, Kevin Johnson's squad is mathematically unable to progress, even if they defeat India in their final group match on Wednesday.
As a result, Wales will compete in placement matches for 5th to 8th place on Friday and Saturday. Scotland, meanwhile, requires only a draw against Uruguay on Wednesday to secure a semi-final berth.
In related news, the Wales men's team secured their qualification for the World Cup by winning the third-place play-off against Poland in Santiago. The men's tournament will take place in August and is jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
