Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who became the third Thunder player to win the MVP award since 2014 last year, played a pivotal role as the Oklahoma City Thunder handed the Los Angeles Lakers one of their most significant defeats in history. The loss was further compounded by an injury to Lakers star Luka Doncic.
The reigning NBA champions secured a decisive 139-96 victory, with Gilgeous-Alexander contributing 28 points. This win improved the Thunder's league-best record to 61-16.
The Lakers have only suffered defeats by a greater margin on six previous occasions. This 43-point loss is just six points shy of their worst margin of defeat, which was a 49-point loss to the Dallas Mavericks in 2017.
This marked the Lakers' first loss in five games. The team now awaits further information regarding the severity of Luka Doncic's left hamstring injury. The Slovenian appeared emotional as he exited the court during the third quarter.
Doncic, who had scored 40 or more points in each of his previous three games and in five of his last seven, is scheduled for an MRI scan on Friday, confirmed Lakers coach JJ Redick.
The Lakers had won 13 of their previous 14 games as they aim to maintain the third seed in the Western Conference, trailing only the Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs, ahead of the playoffs commencing on 18 April.

Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning Most Valuable Player, finished the game with 28 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Isaiah Joe also contributed significantly with 20 points for the Thunder.
For the Lakers, Austin Reaves led the scoring with 15 points despite battling back pain, while LeBron James added 13 points in 26 minutes of play.
The Thunder's 139 points were the highest total conceded by the Lakers this season. The 43-point defeat stands as the Lakers' heaviest loss since a 44-point defeat to Philadelphia in November 2023.
