Thunder Dominate Lakers to Edge Closer to Western Conference Finals
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning NBA MVP, contributed significantly as the Oklahoma City Thunder moved to the brink of another Western Conference Finals appearance with a commanding 131-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. This win gives the Thunder a decisive lead in the play-offs.
The Lakers now face the formidable challenge of becoming the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit.
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 23 points and provided nine assists, while teammate Ajay Mitchell was notably efficient, adding 24 points and 10 assists. Despite 41-year-old LeBron James scoring 19 points, the Lakers, competing without the injured Luka Doncic, were unable to counter the Thunder's dominance in this one-sided series.
The Thunder, who were NBA champions last year, appear poised to be the team to beat once again. Gilgeous-Alexander recorded his highest-scoring game of the series despite a slow start, missing nine of his first 11 shots. His playoff performance has been below his regular season average of 31.1 points per game.
"Obviously, I haven't been my best in performances, but I think I've been able to help the team win and that's most important," said Gilgeous-Alexander.
"As long as we win. If the rest of the play-off run or the rest of my career look like what it looked like the past few games, I'd be OK with it because we won games."
Cavaliers Edge Pistons with Mitchell's 35 Points
In the Eastern Conference, Donovan Mitchell led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 116-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons with an impressive 35-point performance. This win, achieved at Rocket Arena, was crucial for the fourth-seeded Cavaliers, reducing the Pistons' series lead to 2-1.
Cleveland established a 16-point lead by halftime. Although Detroit mounted a comeback led by Cade Cunningham, who recorded a 27-point triple-double including 10 rebounds and 10 assists, Mitchell's late free throws ensured the Cavaliers secured the win.
Knicks and Spurs Also Gain Advantage in Play-Off Series
The New York Knicks are now one game away from advancing after a 108-94 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs hold a 2-1 series lead against the Minnesota Timberwolves following a 115-108 win.
