Swiatek Advances to Italian Open Semi-Finals

Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek has demonstrated a return to her top clay-court form by securing a commanding victory to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open.

The 24-year-old Polish player required just over an hour to defeat American fifth seed Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Swiatek's previous round performance, where she dropped only three games against four-time major winner Naomi Osaka, set a strong precedent. Her decisive win over Pegula further emphasized her resurgence.

Having recently appointed Francisco Roig, former coach of Rafael Nadal, and receiving practice court advice from Nadal himself, Swiatek appears to be regaining the level of play that once made her a dominant force.

Currently ranked world number four, she is increasingly seen as a leading contender for the upcoming French Open title.

"The stuff we did in the last [few] weeks has helped and I have a lot of confidence in my shots," Swiatek said.

Background and Coaching Changes

Swiatek earned the nickname 'Queen of Clay' by winning four Roland Garros titles between 2020 and 2024, along with six WTA Tour titles on clay courts.

However, last year she experienced a decline in dominance on clay, failing to win a clay-court tour event and exiting in the Paris semi-finals.

Under her previous coach Wim Fissette, Swiatek attempted a more aggressive baseline style, but this led to a loss of confidence and inconsistent performances when matches did not go her way.

Her current approach with Roig involves returning to fundamentals, emphasizing high intensity and relentlessness, while maintaining stability in shot-making.

Match Analysis Against Pegula

Against Pegula, Swiatek displayed patience and a higher margin for error, which allowed her to capitalize on her opponent's mistakes.

Although Pegula was below her usual standard on a surface she does not favor, Swiatek's refusal to let her level drop indicated growing confidence.

Swiatek's ability to dominate Pegula's second serve with deep returns was a notable aspect of the match.

Upcoming Challenges

Swiatek is set to face either second seed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan or seventh seed Elina Svitolina from Ukraine in the semi-finals.

These matches will present tougher challenges, but Swiatek's current form signals a strong position heading into the French Open.
