Sinner and Alcaraz Progress in Qatar Open
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz remain on track to potentially face each other in the Qatar Open final after both secured straight-set victories on Wednesday.
World number two Sinner defeated Australia's Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the quarter-finals in Doha. Following this, Alcaraz won his match against France's Valentin Royer with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
The two players met in six finals in 2025, including three Grand Slam finals. World number one Alcaraz claimed victories at the French Open and the US Open, while Sinner triumphed at Wimbledon and in Turin.
Upcoming Matches
Alcaraz, aged 22, is set to face Karen Khachanov in the next round. Khachanov secured his quarter-final spot by defeating Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Meanwhile, sixth seed Jakub Mensik advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Zhang Zhizhen. Mensik will meet Sinner in the quarter-finals. Sinner has demonstrated consistent performance, reaching at least the quarter-finals in 28 of his last 30 tournaments, dating back to the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin.
The 24-year-old Italian, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles last year, has an impressive recent record, having won 22 of his last 23 matches. His sole defeat in this span was against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals last month.
Other Quarter-Finalists
In other notable results, Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas upset world number 11 Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in Doha. Tsitsipas will face fifth seed Andrey Rublev, who defeated Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-4.
The quarter-final lineup is completed by unseeded Frenchman Arthur Fils and eighth seed Czech player Jiri Lehecka, both of whom secured comfortable victories to advance.
