Sabalenka Suffers Unexpected Defeat in French Open Quarter-Final

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka experienced a dramatic collapse during her French Open quarter-final match, losing 6-3, 5-7, 0-6 to 25th seed Diana Shnaider. Despite starting strong and leading 6-3, 4-1, Sabalenka was unable to maintain her composure amid tension and challenging windy conditions, ultimately succumbing to one of the most surprising defeats of her career.

Sabalenka had been aiming to reach her 13th major semi-final in her last 14 appearances, showcasing remarkable consistency in grand slam events. However, her struggle with nerves in critical moments resurfaced in this match, eclipsing even the tension she displayed in last year’s final against Coco Gauff. From a commanding position at 6-3, 4-1, Sabalenka lost 11 of the final 12 games, culminating in a 0-6 final set.

As Sabalenka faltered, Shnaider capitalized on the opportunity with a determined and composed performance. The Russian player minimized errors and maintained precise depth in rallies, demonstrating resilience and tactical acumen. She effectively utilized her powerful left-handed forehand, delivering several decisive down-the-line shots, including a critical break point forehand at 5-5 in the second set.

Entering the third set, Shnaider sustained her momentum, engaging Sabalenka in extended, physically demanding rallies under slow and windy conditions. Sabalenka struggled to regain control, while Shnaider dominated baseline exchanges and executed her forehand with remarkable consistency to secure the victory.

Shnaider to Face Chwalinska in Semifinals

Diana Shnaider will next compete against qualifier Maja Chwalinska, who has emerged as one of the tournament’s most unexpected semi-finalists. Chwalinska defeated 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya to advance, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Ranked No. 114 in the WTA standings, Chwalinska has never previously broken into the top 100 and had only one grand slam main draw win prior to this event. Despite not having faced a top 20 opponent during this tournament, the Polish player has delivered an impressive performance in Paris, winning eight matches while dropping just one set.
