Serena Williams Eyes Potential Return at Queen's Club

Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and 14-time women's doubles major winner alongside her sister Venus, is reportedly in discussions about a possible return to competitive tennis at the Queen's Club tournament next month.

Four years after bidding farewell to professional tennis at the US Open in New York, Williams is contemplating participating in the doubles event at the WTA 500 tournament in London, scheduled to begin in two weeks.

Although no agreement has been finalized, the 44-year-old American has been eligible to return to competition since 22 February, having completed the mandatory six-month period in the drug testing pool.

Williams would require a wildcard entry to compete, and there are two such wildcards available for the grass-court event commencing on Monday, 8 June.

The prestigious Wimbledon Championships, where Williams has secured seven singles and seven doubles titles, will follow three weeks later.

Potential Doubles Partnership and Wildcard Details

The Served podcast, hosted by former men's world number one Andy Roddick, reported that Williams might partner with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko at Queen's Club. However, has not independently confirmed this information.

Williams is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in history. Her 23 Grand Slam singles titles are the most by any woman in the Open era and rank second overall behind Margaret Court. Additionally, she has won 14 major women's doubles titles with her sister Venus, who remains active on the WTA Tour. The sisters also earned three Olympic gold medals in doubles.

Wildcard Allocation and Tournament Considerations

Williams became eligible to return on 22 February but has yet to confirm her participation.

Two doubles wildcards are available for the Queen's Club tournament. One is reserved for a team that includes a former world number one, a Grand Slam champion from the past decade, or a current top-30 player.

Williams has historically avoided the term "retirement," preferring to describe her 2022 departure from tennis as "evolving away" from the sport.

Her last professional singles match was a third-round loss to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open, an event widely believed to be her final competitive appearance.

Earlier in 2022, Williams reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Her last Grand Slam singles title was won in Melbourne in 2017 at age 35.

Lawn Tennis Association's Wildcard Policy

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) traditionally prioritizes British players when awarding wildcards for domestic grass-court events.

All four wildcards for the singles draw are expected to be allocated to British players. However, the LTA may adopt a different stance regarding doubles wildcards given the "exceptional circumstances" surrounding a potential Williams return.

"Never say never, and not wanting to speak of any one individual player, but you will have seen over recent years that those wildcard opportunities are afforded to British players - that is absolutely my fundamental personal belief and philosophy," LTA chief executive Scott Lloyd said at an April briefing for journalists.

"There might be exceptional circumstances which might influence a unique wildcard, but otherwise those playing opportunities we want to afford to British players."

The LTA's performance director, Michael Bourne, also suggested that commercial considerations could influence wildcard decisions.

"It's also really important to remember that we in the performance team understand that players have to earn that right," Bourne said.

"We don't take them for granted. If we didn't think we had a depth of player where it was right for them to take those opportunities, and there was something else that was good for the business, we would hold our hands up."

Venus Williams' Recent Activity

Venus Williams has competed intermittently on the WTA Tour in recent years and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open women's doubles last year.

She is 15 months older than Serena and has participated in seven tournaments so far this year.

Venus' most recent singles victory occurred in Washington last July, shortly after her 45th birthday.

Martina Navratilova holds the record as the oldest woman to win a singles match at a Grand Slam in the Open era, achieving this feat at age 47 in 2004. Navratilova also reached the US Open doubles semi-finals in 2005 and won the US Open mixed doubles title in 2006, just shy of her 50th birthday.
