Sabalenka Advances to Miami Open Quarterfinals
World number one Aryna Sabalenka efficiently secured her place in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open by defeating Zheng Qinwen in straight sets. The reigning champion completed the match in one hour and 25 minutes, winning 6-3, 6-4 against the Chinese player.
At 27 years old, Sabalenka has claimed the US Open title in each of the last two years and is demonstrating strong form at this tournament. She is set to face Hailey Baptiste in the quarterfinals after the American player overcame Latvian Jelena Ostapenko with the same scoreline of 6-3, 6-4.
Coco Gauff Reaches Quarterfinals After Tough Match
Fourth seed Coco Gauff also progressed to the quarterfinals following a challenging 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Romania's Sorana Cirstea. The 22-year-old American experienced a difficult match, serving six double faults and being broken five times, but ultimately secured the win. Gauff will next compete against either Amanda Anisimova or Belinda Bencic.
The Miami Open is Gauff's home tournament, and she has expressed a strong desire to win the title. However, she is managing her expectations this year, especially after retiring from a match at Indian Wells earlier in the month due to a nerve issue in her left arm.
"I don't really feel pressure, I feel more supported at this event," Gauff said. "I want to win this tournament so bad because it is my home tournament. But I didn't have the best preparation, so setting expectations lower allows me to free up and not expect too much of myself."
Medvedev Eliminated; Umpire Incident During Match
In the men's draw, former world number one Daniil Medvedev, who had previously defeated Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells, was eliminated in the round of 32 by Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine player won the match 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.
During the match, umpire Mohamed Lahyani experienced a brief incident when his elevated chair became entangled with the 'spider cam,' an aerial camera that moves over the court. Lahyani promptly descended from his chair while ball boys intervened to prevent it from falling.
"I didn't know what to expect, it was a great match, super tough," Cerundolo commented. "It was my first match against Daniil. He's probably one of the only guys on tour who I have never played. He has had a great year so far."
