Raducanu Drawn Against Solano Sierra in Challenging French Open Opener
Emma Raducanu has participated in the French Open only twice, reaching the second round on both occasions.
At this year's French Open, British number one Emma Raducanu faces a demanding first-round match against Argentine clay-court specialist Solano Sierra.
Raducanu, currently ranked 37th in the world, did not secure a seeding for the clay-court Grand Slam. Despite this, the draw could have been more difficult than facing 64th-ranked Sierra, as there was a possibility of encountering one of the top-ranked players early.
Should Raducanu overcome Sierra, she may face Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the second round, who was the runner-up at the 2024 tournament.
British number two Katie Boulter is set to open her campaign against American wildcard Akasha Urhobo. Additionally, Francesca Jones, the only other British female competitor in the singles draw, will face Brazil's 2023 semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Players to Cut Short French Open Interviews in Pay Dispute
In the men's singles, Cameron Norrie, the sole British seeded player, will play Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.
Jacob Fearnley is drawn against Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo, with the likely prospect of facing world number one Jannik Sinner in the second round.
Italy's Jannik Sinner, the overwhelming favorite for the title following the injury withdrawal of rival Carlos Alcaraz, begins his quest to become only the 10th man to complete the career Grand Slam against French wildcard Clement Tabur.
Three-time champion Novak Djokovic received a challenging draw as he aims for a record 25th major title. The 39-year-old, who will celebrate his birthday on Friday, opens against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, known for his powerful serve and currently coached by former British number one Greg Rusedski.
Can Rehired Richardson Spark Raducanu Revival?
Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu has experienced another interrupted season after contracting a virus in February, with lingering effects limiting her to only two tournaments since then.
Raducanu returned to competition this week at Strasbourg after a two-month absence but lost in straight sets to France's Diane Perry.
It remains to be seen what expectations the 23-year-old holds for Roland Garros. Her performances at Grand Slam events have generally been underwhelming, with a particularly disappointing second-round loss at the Australian Open.
Shortly after that tournament, Raducanu parted ways with Rafael Nadal's former coach Francisco Roig and has now rehired Andrew Richardson, the coach who guided her to the 2021 US Open title as a teenage qualifier.
Since that breakthrough, Raducanu has advanced beyond the third round of a Grand Slam only once.
The clay surface has never been one on which she has felt fully comfortable, and it has aggravated a persistent back issue.
If Richardson's return is to trigger a resurgence in Raducanu's career, it is unlikely to occur during the next two weeks, given her lack of match fitness and a challenging draw.
