Norrie Advances to Indian Wells Quarter-Finals
Great Britain's Cameron Norrie defeated Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata in the last 16 at Indian Wells and may face world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
Norrie has not dropped a set in this year's tournament, following his victory over sixth seed Alex de Minaur in the previous round with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win against world number 117 Hijikata in one hour and 16 minutes.
The 30-year-old left-hander broke Hijikata's serve in the opening game and, after securing the first set, broke twice more in the second to advance to the last eight. On his own serve, the 27th seed faced only one break point throughout the match.
Norrie has a strong record at the hard-court event in California. This marks his eighth appearance in the men's singles and the fourth time he has reached at least the quarter-final stage. He won the title in 2021 but was eliminated in the last eight in the subsequent two years.
Other Matches and Prospects at Indian Wells
Alcaraz is scheduled to attempt to secure his quarter-final spot against Norwegian 13th seed Casper Ruud later on Wednesday.
Norrie holds a 3-5 record against the Spaniard at tour-level matches, including a win in their most recent encounter at the Paris Masters in October.
Additionally, British players Jack Draper and Sonay Kartal are set to compete in their last-16 matches later in the day. Draper, the defending champion at Indian Wells, will face Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles.
Kartal, who previously defeated 2025 Australian Open winner Madison Keys, will next compete against Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, who claimed her second major title in Melbourne this January.
