Osaka reaches Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time

Naomi Osaka, who had never advanced beyond the third round at Wimbledon before, delivered a stunning performance to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka and secure her place in the quarter-finals.

The Japanese player out-served, out-hit, and out-thought the fellow four-time Grand Slam champion, winning 6-2 7-6 (7-2) on Centre Court.

This marks Sabalenka's earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open and is the first time in 122 matches that she has been eliminated in straight sets at a major.

Osaka appeared overwhelmed with emotion, holding her racquet to her head in disbelief after sealing victory on her second match point.

This is Osaka's first appearance in the Wimbledon last eight, following her breakthrough into the second week of the French Open last month.

"It's been a long time since I had so much fun on the court," said Osaka.

The match was their fourth meeting in three months, with Sabalenka having won the previous three encounters. However, Osaka dominated this contest, matching Sabalenka's power and pace while moving effectively around the court.

Sabalenka exited the tournament swiftly, continuing her search for a first Grand Slam title this year.

Osaka will next face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova for a spot in the semi-finals.

Muchova's victory over 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova guarantees a new women's singles champion for the 10th consecutive tournament.

Osaka beats Sabalenka at her own game

Since returning from maternity leave in July 2023, Osaka had struggled to regain her top form, but a coaching change late last year appears to have contributed to her resurgence.

Under the guidance of Tomasz Wiktorowski, who previously coached Iga Swiatek, Osaka reached the 2025 US Open semi-finals and achieved career-best results at Roland Garros and now Wimbledon.

Asked about her improvement on grass courts, Osaka said: "The big Polish man! Shout out Tomasz!"
"Shout out to the rest of my team, they are the best. I have so much fun with them and I learn so much from them.
I'm so grateful they are on this journey with me."

Osaka executed a game plan that mirrored what Sabalenka typically imposes on her opponents—dominating baseline rallies and using her serve and forehand to control points.

An early big winner, the second of 21 she hit during the match, gave Osaka a break in the first set. She quickly moved to a double break lead as Sabalenka committed numerous errors.

Both players hit the ball with power, but Osaka's greater control allowed her to close out the opening set in just 32 minutes.

Sabalenka struggled in the second set, visibly frustrated at times, even striking her head with her racquet. Her serve helped her stay in the set, however.

Having won 21 consecutive tie-breaks at majors, Sabalenka likely expected to force a deciding set, but Osaka took charge again, racing to a 5-1 lead in the tie-break and maintaining her advantage to win.
