Jack Draper Draws Inspiration from Andy Murray in Comeback Victory
British tennis player Jack Draper, currently ranked 160th in the world, has credited his new coach, Sir Andy Murray, as a source of motivation in securing a hard-fought win during his first competitive match in over two months.
Draper, aged 24, had been sidelined since April due to a knee injury but recently began working with Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, ahead of the grass-court season. Their collaboration started positively at the Eastbourne tournament, where Draper overcame a late challenge from American Marcos Giron to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
"I haven't called him 'Sir' yet - that's not going to happen. I'm really grateful to Andy that he's chosen to help me and wants to help me. Today was a performance a bit like what he used to do - winning ugly."
This victory marked Draper's first since his notable win over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells in March.
Match Performance and Challenges
Draper demonstrated solid movement around the court and a particularly strong serve, conceding just one point on his first serve during the opening set, which he completed in 35 minutes. Early in the second set, Draper secured a quick break, but when serving for the match at 5-4, he faced triple break-back points. Giron capitalized on this opportunity to level the set and push the match into a tie-break.
Despite the pressure, Draper maintained composure in the tie-break to clinch the match and advance to face fellow Briton Jack Pinnington Jones.
"I lost concentration, which can happen if you haven't played for a while and you're against a good player like Marcos," Draper admitted.
Injury Struggles and Career Context
The left-handed Draper has faced multiple injury setbacks, including issues with his arm, knee, and shoulder, limiting him to just 12 matches over the past year. These problems began at Wimbledon last year during what was the best period of his career, following his semi-final appearance at the 2024 US Open and ascent to a career-high world ranking of fourth.
Reflecting on his return to competition on the south coast, Draper expressed appreciation for Murray's support during a challenging period.
"Andy, truthfully, is one of my biggest inspirations. When I was younger I remember him playing all the big events and being there to watch him. He believes in my game, he believes in me as a person. That's what I really need right now coming back from the year I have had."
