French Open Day Eleven: Eastern European and Italian Presence on Philippe Chatrier

Bonjour et bienvenue au jour onze de Roland Garros, where there is a notable presence of Eastern European and Italian players on Philippe Chatrier.

First up is the qualifier Maja Chwalinska, not to be confused with the Pole many expected to remain in the tournament, facing the 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya. Chwalinska, who progressed through the junior ranks alongside Iga Swiatek before their careers diverged, had previously won only one Grand Slam match before this event. Now, at 24 years old, she has reached the quarter-finals. Kalinskaya, 27, has admitted that reaching this stage was unexpected, having advanced this far at a major only once before, at the 2024 Australian Open.

This stage is far from new territory for Aryna Sabalenka, who has remained composed amid the upheaval around her. She stands as the sole Grand Slam champion still competing in both the women's and men's draws, advancing to face another surprise quarter-finalist, Russia's Diana Shnaider. Sabalenka made a strong statement on the red clay with a commanding victory over Naomi Osaka in the previous round. Even Shnaider acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating:

"Today’s match is most likely a chance to get experience for the future."

Sabalenka is aware that her moment is now. Meanwhile, for Felix Auger-Aliassime, the former prodigy, this could be a pivotal moment. For the first time in his Slam career, he is the highest-ranked player remaining in his half of the draw, which, despite losing Italy’s greatest hope Jannik Sinner, still includes three Italians: Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and Matteo Arnaldi.

Auger-Aliassime faces Cobolli in a highly anticipated match that is difficult to predict. Auger-Aliassime brings significant big-match experience, while Cobolli is recognized as a talented player. Later in the night session, Matteo Berrettini, returning after a period plagued by injuries, will meet the resilient Matteo Arnaldi, who has already contested 18 sets to reach this stage.

Play is scheduled to begin at 11h (10am BST). On y va!
