Welcome to Roland-Garros 2026 – Final Day

Greetings to all and welcome to the final day of Roland-Garros 2026!

In broad terms, sport was originally created to determine who was the fastest, strongest, and best. However, that was long ago, and the vast entity we have developed now serves a very different purpose: in a fragmented, atomised, and divided world, sport represents companionship and community, acting as a real-time, real-life friend and family. Whether we are sad, lonely, or bored, sport supports us, offering care, nurture, and lessons with gentle omnipresence, expecting nothing in return. Likewise, when we are happy, surrounded by company and engaged, sport remains a steadfast presence, caring and nurturing without demand.

For these reasons, even the poorest sport is preferable to almost anything else—and truly, this tournament has not been lacking in quality. Over the past two weeks, we have witnessed a succession of nearly unbelievable matches and results. Our days have been enriched and our lives affirmed by a series of compelling stories that remind us how to feel—a joy shared globally—and the knowledge that these experiences will be discussed for the rest of our lives. This is a precious, restorative elixir to carry forward. But now, we seek the final that we and the tournament deserve.

Alexander Zverev’s Journey and Expectations

Alexander Zverev has likely spent most of his life expecting that he would eventually become a Grand Slam champion. To be honest, his demeanor has never concealed this ambition. Although he lost the 2020 US Open final to Dominic Thiem after leading by two sets and was defeated in a five-set final by Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 edition of this tournament, the belief that his time would come persisted. However, when he reached the 2025 final in Melbourne only to suffer a decisive defeat by Jannik Sinner, something within him shifted—and understandably so. He was good, but significantly less effective than the two best players, fading as they improved, with no indication he could surpass both in a two-week major event.

This makes the current fortnight an opportunity of a lifetime, especially with Alcaraz injured and Sinner overcome by illness. The question now is whether this situation will inspire Zverev or increase the pressure to a paralyzing degree that inhibits his performance; either outcome would not be surprising.

Flavio Cobolli: A Formidable Opponent

Although many consider a final against Flavio Cobolli to be almost a guaranteed win for Zverev, this is not entirely accurate. Certainly, Zverev is capable of winning in straight sets, but he faces an opponent who has demonstrated for several years that he possesses the talent to challenge the elite. Cobolli’s forehand is a tremendous shot, he returns superbly, and moves beautifully—perhaps the quickest player on tour. More importantly, he competes with genuine intent and, although naturally nervous, he will not freeze. This is partly because he does not carry the burden of expectation, but mainly because he is one of those athletes built differently from the rest of us, his warmth transforming fear into opportunity. He will be prepared.

Anticipation for the Final

And so will we, caring for ourselves by caring about what we are about to witness, becoming better through the unique captivation of Roland-Garros 2026. Chauette! On y va!
