Welcome to Roland-Garros 2026 – Day One
Salut et bienvenue à Roland-Garros 2026 – jour un! Our summer begins here, and it promises to be an exciting event – or, to stay on theme, le jazzeur.
While there is a strong sense of how the men’s tournament might unfold, the journey to that conclusion remains engaging, allowing us to set aside any sense of inevitability for now. The women’s competition, in particular, promises an intense contest for the ages. The top four seeds all have strong prospects: Aryna Sabalenka is currently the best player in the world; Iga Swiatek is a four-time French Open champion who had won three consecutive titles prior to last year; Coco Gauff is the defending champion; and Elena Rybakina is rapidly rising, combining power with ease.
In addition, there is a talented group of other competitors including Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina, Victoria Mboko, Karolína Muchová, Naomi Osaka, and others, each capable of defeating any opponent on a good day. This highlights the fact that tennis has become one of the most competitive and highest-level sports globally.
Day One Matches to Watch
Unsurprisingly, the most anticipated match today is on the women’s side, where Hailey Baptiste, seeded 26th, faces Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 French Open champion and 2024 Wimbledon winner. However, this is not the only notable encounter. Taylor Fritz will play Nishesh Basavareddy in a promising match, Alexander Zverev is set to meet Benjamin Bonzi, Francesca Jones will take on Bea Haddad Maia, and Emma Raducanu, Mirra Andreeva, and João Fonseca will also begin their campaigns.
