Alcaraz Faces First Defeat of Season at Indian Wells
Spanish world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz experienced his first loss of the tennis season when Daniil Medvedev defeated him 6-3, 7-6(3) in the semi-finals at Indian Wells. This defeat ended Alcaraz's impressive 16-match winning streak that had included his Australian Open title, where he became the youngest player to complete the career Grand Slam.
Medvedev, ranked world No 11, will advance to the final to face Jannik Sinner on Sunday.
Alcaraz Comments on the Match and Opponent's Performance
Following the match, Alcaraz expressed the difficulty of constantly being the player to beat and acknowledged the high level of Medvedev's performance.
“What I’m just getting tired a little bit is to get that target on my back all the time,”
“I have never seen Daniil playing like this. I knew at the beginning that he was going to play aggressive, but how, the way he did it, surprised me a lot. He didn’t even miss. I realised that I had to do something different ... and he was finding every solution and every answer to my shots,”
Alcaraz noted that Medvedev’s aggressive style and precision made it challenging to find an effective response during the match.
Maintaining a Positive Outlook Despite the Loss
The seven-time Grand Slam champion remained optimistic despite the setback, emphasizing the high standards required to defeat him.
“I have been playing great tennis, and I just show the players and show the people that if they want to beat me, they have to play at their best level one hour and a half, two hours in every match,”
“I have to see the good things about this loss. It is about the people and the players thinking that they need to play like this level if they want to beat me.”
Looking Ahead: Focus on Goals Over Winning Streaks
Alcaraz indicated that his focus remains on pursuing his objectives rather than solely on winning streaks.
“I’m not thinking about I need to win or I have to win. It’s just about chasing my goals, chasing what I just set up before every tournament,”
“That’s my mindset.”
He now aims to start a new winning streak while maintaining his commitment to his broader goals in the sport.
