Cameron Norrie Advances in Madrid Open After Tough Win Over Tomas Machac
British tennis player Cameron Norrie secured a hard-fought victory against Tomas Machac to advance to the third round of the Madrid Open. The match was described by Norrie as "one of the favourite matches" of his career.
Norrie won the first set decisively but missed a match point in the second set, which led to a third-set tie-break where he ultimately prevailed with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5).
The 30-year-old, who recently reached the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open, has yet to progress beyond the third round in Madrid.
"I was feeling the ball really well in the first set but it was tough to hang with him in the second and I had to dig deep in the third set when I was down a break," Norrie told Sky Sports.
"It was so, so good. It was one of the favourite matches of my career - the atmosphere was so good and it tested me in so many ways.
These are the kind of matches where you can get through them and go on to have a great week."
Norrie is set to face either American Tommy Paul or Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante in the next round.
In the opening game, Norrie established control by breaking Machac’s serve and completed the first set in 36 minutes. However, the remainder of the match saw a significant shift in momentum.
Machac stabilized his performance in the second set and managed to level the match after saving a match point in the tie-break. Despite numerous opportunities, Machac converted only one of his 12 break point chances.
Facing a break down and an early exit as Machac served for the match, Norrie demonstrated resilience by breaking back and maintaining composure to win the tie-break.
