Scotland experienced 6-5 losses to Sweden and Japan in their initial matches at the World Men's Curling Championships held in Utah.

Ross Whyte's rink was narrowly defeated in the final end by the Swedish team led by Niklas Edin, a seven-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist from four years ago.

Whyte, along with teammates Robin Brydone, Euan Kyle, and Craig Waddell, fell behind 2-0 after the first end but responded strongly with three points in the second, initiating a fluctuating contest.

Scotland equalized the score at 5-5 after eight ends when skip Whyte executed a draw for one point. Edin then blanked the ninth end to retain the hammer advantage going into the final end.

However, when Sweden left Whyte with a challenging takeout opportunity to promote his stone, he missed, allowing Sweden to score one point and secure the victory.

Match Against Japan

In the subsequent match against Japan, Scotland trailed 3-1 by the fourth end but managed to level the score with two points in the fifth end. The teams exchanged twos later in the game and were tied heading into the final end, where Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi's rink scored the decisive point to win.

Context and Upcoming Matches

Scotland is defending the title won by Bruce Mouat's rink last year. Mouat's team chose not to participate in this edition after securing a silver medal for Great Britain at the Olympics in Cortina last month.

Whyte and his team are scheduled to face Olympic champions Canada at 20:00 GMT on Saturday.
