Henderson Suspended for Challenge Cup Final

Ulster captain Iain Henderson will be absent from the Challenge Cup final against Montpellier after receiving a three-match suspension from the United Rugby Championship (URC).

During Ulster's thrilling 38-38 draw with the Stormers in the URC on Friday, Henderson was initially shown a yellow card which was subsequently upgraded to a 20-minute red card for executing a croc roll on Deon Fourie.

This week, the 34-year-old appeared before an Independent Disciplinary Committee and

"accepted that he had committed an act of foul play that warranted a red card"
.

The offense fell under law 9.20 (d), which specifies that

"a player may remove the tackler from the tackle area, but must not roll, pull or twist an opponent"
.

The Committee classified the foul play as

"reckless"
and set a
"mid-range entry point of six weeks for sanctioning"
.

However, Henderson's suspension was reduced by 50% due to mitigating factors including his

"previous good record (one suspension in a 15-year playing career), his remorse and immediate concern for the opponent player plus his good conduct and full co-operation with the disciplinary process"
.

Consequently, the second row was suspended for three weeks.

Impact on Upcoming Matches

Henderson will miss Ulster's final URC regular-season match against Glasgow Warriors on Friday as well as the Challenge Cup final scheduled in Bilbao.

The final match of his suspension depends on whether Richie Murphy's side qualify for the URC play-offs. If Ulster finishes in the top eight and advances to the quarter-finals at the end of the month, Henderson will be banned for that game. Should they fail to qualify, the suspension will carry over to Ireland's Nations Championship opener against Australia on 4 July.

Additional Team Challenges Ahead of Final

Henderson's suspension presents a significant setback for Murphy's preparations as Ulster aims to secure their first trophy in two decades.

Furthermore, the team will be without key centre Stuart McCloskey for the final on 22 May after he sustained a hamstring injury during the semi-final victory over Exeter Chiefs.

Back row David McCann (knee) and full-back Jacob Stockdale (facial fracture) are also doubtful for the European final.
